Antioxidants are compounds found in certain foods that assist in stopping or delaying damage to the cells. They remove certain waste products in our cells called ‘free radicals’ which are caused by smoking, toxins, and stress.
Think of Antioxidants as the superheroes, whereas the free radicals are the villains and the healthy cells are the innocent hostages in between who need rescuing!
The causes of free radicals are not limited to but including the sun and other forms of radiation, pollution such as chemicals and cigarette smoke, pesticides and chemicals in foods, stress, and poor nutrition.
New research is now stating that the body needs a balance of antioxidants and free radicals because you cannot completely avoid free radicals but minimize the damage that they cause. If villains and evil did not exist, then there would be no reason for good and superheroes 🙂
